In 4th & 5th grades Tate was on the robotics team at Old Bridge Elem, and I was a volunteer "coach" those 2 years. Macy decided this year in 4th grade that she wanted to apply for the team, so I assumed that I would assist again as I did for Tate. Well thankfully Brian's school schedule now allows for him to be home earlier than in years past, so he took over for me!
On Sat Nov 17 they had their first robotics competition at the First Lego League tournament...
Show time was 8:30am and the day ended at about 3:30
The mission field-
The competition is about so much more than just building and programing a robot. There is a research project as well- theirs was about growing food in space using hydroponics. Here they are before the judges doing a skit about it-
They also have to talk with the judges at length about the design of their robot and be able to explain the core values of the First Lego League-
The team had 9 members this year- 5 girls and 4 boys. And while they worked well together, the girls very much wanted to beat the boys!
And they did! There are 3 rounds for the robot mission- the boys scored 107 and the girls 120! They would come in second place, beat out by a team who score 136. Our robot scored so high the first 2 rounds that other coaches were coming over to look at it and talk with the kids about how they built it. In fact we even saw a couple of them taking pictures of it, like paparazzi!
The high schooler MC for the day was amazing- from his wig to his tutus to his hover board- he made the day so fun for us all-
