Chinese New Year

Many people of Chinese heritage live in Jakarta, similar to how many people of Mexican heritage live in San Diego. So this year, I decided to take the family on a tour of Chinatown here in Jakarta during Chinese New Year week.

This was the original home of the mayor of Chinatown. It has been well preserved, and you can see that a modern hotel has been built up around it-

These red wax candles in the temples were sometimes almost as tall as us!

In one temple, it is tradition for each person to get a prediction of the future-

Brian's was hopeful. Tate's? Not so much...

Walking through what was once a very vibrant opium district-

Looking back on the edge of Chinatown, comparing it to a historic picture-

Candy? Nuts?

Eeels?

We decided on tea. The kids weren't too thrilled with our tea tasting-

Besides some terrible rain, it was a great day exploring a part of the city and learning about Chinese history and culture together.
